The LCMS Youth Gathering will conclude with the Divine Service Worship. Over 20,000 people will join in worshipping our God and Savior.

Youth have opportunity to be involved in sharing their artistic gifts and talents with the Gathering through participating in the Gathering Choir or Wind Symphony.

The 2019 Gathering Wind Symphony Director

Dr. Richard Fischer, Distinguished Professor of Music and the Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair for Music Performance, is in his 45th year as director of the Wind Symphony and University Band at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill. He holds the bachelor of music education and master of music degrees from De Paul University and the doctor of musical arts degree from Michigan State University. He has also studied at Cornell College and the University of Northern Colorado.

Since Fischer's arrival in 1974, the Wind Symphony has performed concerts in 43 states, Canada, Europe, China and South Africa. The Wind Symphony has also performed at the National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the Illinois Music Educators Conference and Lutheran Education Association convocations in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Grand Rapids. In the fall of 1995, the ensemble performed at The Symphony Center in Chicago. The Wind Symphony performed as the "Showcase Ensemble" for the New York City Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall on March 4, 2014 and will again on March 13, 2019.

Instruments in the Wind Symphony include: Piccolo, Flutes, Oboes, Bassoons, B flat Soprano Clarinets, Bass Clarinets, E flat Alto Saxophones, B flat Tenor Saxophones, E flat Baritone Saxophones, French Horns, Trumpets/Cornets, Trombones, Baritones, Tubas, String Bass, Timpani, Mallet Percussion, Drums, Keyboard

Expectations: All applications and audition videos must be submitted online by April 22, 2019. Applicants will be notified by mail by May 22, 2019 of their selection. Members of the Wind Symphony will receive a pack of music and CD so the music can be learned in advance of the Gathering.

Members are expected to attend rehearsals at the Hyatt Regency from 3:45-5:15pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There will be a final rehearsal at the US Bank Stadium early Monday morning. Rehearsals will not conflict with other Gathering programming.

The Wind Symphony will participate in the Monday morning worship service on July 15, 2019.

As part of your application you be asked to submit a link to your audition video.

Your audition video should include:

  • Your first name, last name, high school, city and state
  • Excerpt of a slow, expressive etude or solo movement (at least one minute)
  • Excerpt of a fast technical etude or solo movement
  • A scale that demonstrates your range. Please name the scale.
